I've been intrigued following the media coverage of the general election campaign. The spotlight has been well and truly on individuals as the first live TV debates come to the UK. I confess, I haven't watched all three in detail and yet the excerpts I have seen have been powerful in influencing my opinion of the leaders. I spend a fair amount of time in client work helping people explore their own authenticity. Our clients and customers are drawn to us because at first they sense a kindred spirit and then a deeper liking and trust develops. This holds true for big brands and solo professionals alike and every other sort of size and format in between.
The key, especially for those of us who deliver a service, is to be ourselves ... to be happy and comfortable with ourselves, clear on the value we are delivering. If we are hiding or, worse, pretending to be someone else, then our truth will simply not shine through. Our "audience" will respond accordingly (largely subconciously) and we will have effectively set up a force field of resistance ... a line which our prospective customers are unwilling to cross.
So, we can't pretend. We have to be genuine. We have to be happy with who we are. We have to be coming from a place of generosity.
If we experience feelings of doubt, uncertainty, fear, unease, then it's time for a little reflection and unpicking. Usually, this process is about refinement and adjustment rather than a complete change of direction ... usually. So, it's not scary and will get you to a much more positive place where being yourself is easy and enjoyable ... and people become attracted to you once again.
